Brunel University London is a world-class university based in Uxbridge, West London, and was established in 1966. Our mission has always been to combine academic rigour with the practical, entrepreneurial and imaginative approach pioneered by our namesake Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

History

Our history can be traced back to 1798. Through investment, redevelopment and modernisation, Brunel University London has changed dramatically to become the campus it is today.

Our heritage is extensive; here are just a few key dates that played a part in Brunel University London becoming the world-class institution it currently is today:

1957

Acton Technological College is divided into two, creating the new institution Brunel College of Technology.

1966

Brunel College is awarded a Royal Charter on 9 June, allowing it to become Brunel University. The first students move to Uxbridge in 1967. The transfer of all departments from Acton to Uxbridge is completed in 1971.

1995

West London Institute of Higher Education becomes Brunel University College, merging with the University two years later.

2005

The £7 million indoor athletics and netball centre is opened.

2006

All campuses are migrated into Brunel’s Uxbridge campus. 2006 marks Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s 200th birthday as well as Brunel University’s 40th anniversary of being awarded the Royal Charter.

2014

Brunel undergoes a major internal reorganisation, becoming Brunel University London. The logo is changed and three colleges are formed to represent all subjects within the University.
