The University College was founded in Nottingham in 1881 and the University-was granted its Royal Charter in 1948. Since that time it has continued to develop and expand, becoming one of Britain’s leading universities with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
The University is located on a beautiful 330-acre landscaped campus, three miles from the centre of the historic and cosmopolitan City of Nottingham. The University divides its 31 Academic Schools into six Faculties: Arts; Law and Social Sciences; Education; Science (including Agricultural and Food Sciences); Engineering; Medicine and Health Sciences. Each Faculty offers a range of Foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes. In addition, the University has an established reputation as a centre for high-quality research across the whole range of disciplines.
The University has seven libraries covering all disciplines. Computers, e-mail and the World Wide Web are widely available. There is a Centre for English Language Education, which offers free in-sessional classes throughout the academic year, in addition to programmes which may be taken prior to starting a degree course. The sporting facilities are wide-ranging and include a boathouse on the River Trent, indoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, athletics grounds and a purpose-built indoor sports centre.
Accommodation in single, centrally heated study-bedrooms in University accommodation is guaranteed to all first-year students applying by the required date. Many postgraduate students are offered housing in University owned apartments/flats. The University has a strong commitment to the welfare and pastoral care of all its students and in particular to the needs of international students. A Welcome Programme and a range of activities and outings organised by the International Students Bureau. Careers Advice, a Health Centre, Counselling Services, an Ecumenical Chaplaincy, Moslem Prayer Room and many National Societies are all available to support and assist international students during their time at Nottingham.
